My sister and I went to New York in May.
I had never been but always wanted to go, so it was a bucket list trip for me for my 40th birthday.
She is a planner and doer so she was the perfect person to go with, I am sure I wouldn’t have seen a quarter of the sights if I hadn’t gone with her.
We flew in right over top of the Statue of Liberty. She was the first thing we saw and I started to cry when I saw her, I cried for the next 4 days.
That city has a heartbeat of its own, and I loved it.
Yes there was lots of people, and yes I’m a country girl who loves wide open spaces and the quiet… but all of those people were hustling. They weren’t in your face, they weren’t in your way, they were doing life at top notch.
I could go on and on about everything I loved from the horse drawn carriage rides in Central Park to seeing Bette Midler on Broadway and everything in between. Every minute was filled with something new and incredible to see or do.
I came away with such a strong appreciation for the people who came before us.
Someone had the forethought and courage to build a huge park (it’s all man made) in the middle of a city knowing that people would need a reprieve from the hustle and bustle.
Someone had the forethought and cared enough to build beautiful buildings that would become historical because of their beauty. From the Post Office, to the fire hall, to Grand Central Station and don’t forget the Rockefeller Centre and Empire State Building and hundreds more. They don’t build buildings like those anymore, they are like Palaces, the architecture is stunning.
They built the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge and some really incredible theatres on broadway.
The point of all of this rambling about New York is that if these people who came before us hadn’t cared about doing projects that matter it wouldn’t be there for us to enjoy now.
If the people who came before us didn’t care about leaving a legacy, they wouldn’t have left anything behind for the generations to come.
We are all obligated to do our part, to help the world be a little bit better because we were here.
We don’t have to build Central Park or beautiful buildings unless that’s our dream, but we can contribute to society, be generous, help each other, and share with each other.
Let’s be a part of history and each help in our own way to make the world a little better than it was before.
