5 truths about being human

by jodi // May 20

Maybe there is no normal.

Or maybe we have a new normal.

What is normal anyway?

If you come from dysfunction, you won’t know what normal is but there are certain things that are true about humans, and learning those things can help you navigate.

We are wired for growth and progress. The world as we know it today didn’t get this way because we sat around. Humans build things and we are happiest when we are seeing progress. Work isn’t about being a slave for money it is about contributing to society and this masterpiece we call our world. Your role in that matters because every little bit counts.

We are wired for connection. Humans are a community animal. We are deeply afraid of being ostracized from society. Quality not quantity matter here. The deeper connection to yourself, to others, to the earth, and to a higher power are all important and bring us peace. You are never alone.

We need to be seen. We are all doing the best we can. Really seeing that within ourselves and each other changes everything. Showing up so you can be seen by others feels good. We are unique and special and it matters to us.

We need somewhere to belong. Brene Brown says “true belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are, it requires you to be who you are.” When we belong to ourselves we will stop trying to fit in and then we can be apart of something. Find somewhere that you feel like you belong no matter what.

We need love. Love is the best feeling in the world and that alone means something. I questioned our need for love for a brief time until one day I imagined never being loved by anyone again. That was the worst feeling in the world. (By the way, shame is feeling like we are not loveable, and that’s why its the worst thing to feel.) Admitting that being loved is important to us changes the way we operate.

When you begin to see how these truths play out in your life you can lean into them deeper, share them with others, and bring more peace, and joy into your life because you will no longer be working against your hardwiring, you will be working with it.

And the better it gets, the better it gets.
