I had to start writing this blog for selfish reasons, or I may not have started. At that point in my life, I knew the basic fundamentals of being a good person, being kind and helping others, but I still thought everything was all about me. Probably because my life was all about me, I didn’t have a purpose larger than my own little world.
As people started to show up and read everyday, I started to feel a sense of duty to write something they might connect with, so I started searching for the ways we are all the same and tried to share stories from that perspective, as a service to others and consciously writing without any agenda of my own.
One day I was listening to Seth Godin on a podcast and he said the best art happens when you are making it for yourself.
This was confusing for me because writing is an art, but I was now sharing stories as a service to others. I went back the drawing board. How could I make something for myself that would still serve the people who show up to read?
I thought about what I would want as a reader.
I want to read about love and how we can love more and love deeper. I want to read things that touch my heart and make me feel good – especially first thing in the morning. I want to read something that inspires me. I want to learn how someone got to where they are, how they figured life out, and how they did hard things. I want to know all about when someone has an aha! Moment. I want to feel hope for the future no matter how rough the present is. I want to see others overcome fear and find courage.
I also wanted to write about those things. I wanted to start my day in that space. I decided I would write to touch someone’s heart, to inspire them, to have something positive or heart warming to read as they start their day, and to teach what I’ve learned.
When I combined all of that together, I started to understand that this is how life works. Every single thing that’s ever been created and that’s truly amazing first lived in someone’s heart. Every great novel, every great movie, every beautiful piece of architecture.
Every great vision that ever came to life is a love story.
We are so lucky. We have the privilege to create the life we want and when we choose to accept that privilege, our life becomes art.
The best art happens when you are making it for yourself.
I beg you not to accept what you feel is an average life, but to create the best life, the one that you have made for you.
P.S. If you don’t know what that means for you, I hope you’ll join me as we experience the Subtle Art of Self-Awareness on January 24 in Airdrie together. It is an evening designed and intended to help you tap in to what your internal guidance system is telling you. The sign up form is here.
