Sometimes the gap between where you want to be and where you are is large. So we try to force ourselves to get there.

We want to lose weight, so we do the Keto diet and lose the weight fast. We want to run a marathon so we start by trying to run 5 miles. We want to have more money so we work ourselves to the bone.

You can get to where you want to go by forcing yourself to do it, but it’s not likely to stick because you don’t see yourself as the person who belongs there and that can sabotage your staying power.

Instead of trying to get from here to there as fast as possible, set yourself in that direction and take one small manageable step that you know you can do.

Maybe you add more vegetables into your diet, or maybe you stop eating white bread. Maybe you simply promise to run to the end of your driveway everyday. Or maybe you look for a way to contribute to someone else’s life that will be valuable to them.

Where you want to be isn’t where you need to be… it’s just the direction you’re headed. Give yourself a chance to gather up some wins by making small steps in the direction you’re heading, build on those once you’re ready for more.

You have a lifetime to get where you’re going, just let it unfold naturally.
