I used to think my way through everything. My ego likes to be smart. They tried to put me in enrichment programs in middle school (my parents declined and kept me mainstream), I pulled off good grades with very little effort, because I’m visual, school was a really easy environment for me to learn in.

Because my ego thrived on this label, I was always working overtime to outsmart the system, and outsmart other people. When my ego was involved I was looking for inconsistencies so I could say ha! I gotcha! I am right and you are wrong! It was a bit hard on my relationships.

Luckily I belonged to 2 different worlds in those days. The second world was filled with animals. I grew up on the back of a horse, with a dog in tow, cats (and mice) and occasionally a litter of kittens in the barn.

Animals don’t care how smart you are, and they don’t stroke your ego… in fact they humble you because they don’t have an agenda of their own and they are constantly reflecting yours back to you.

In this world, all of the messages are delivered energetically and translated through what you feel. The more you think the worse things get and clarity with your questions and answers is everything.

We are at the lawyers and in arbitration this week. This world is filled with over thinking, outwitting, calculating, and fact finding. Riddled amongst and underneath all of the things my ego still begs to take over on, there is a quest for clarity and the truth, procedures to eliminate all of the “gotchas”, and a platform for each person to tell their story and feel heard.

When I take a step back and look at the systems society uses, I am always comforted to find that there are built in checks and balances that speak to our basic emotional needs.

When I’m stuck in ego and stuck in my head, I don’t see them and I try to outsmart them, but when I can put that bad boy away for a minute and dig back in to my heart I am filled with gratitude for the people who came before me and cared enough to build a system that doesn’t bully the good guys.

In every space the good things are there if you look for them. We can live in a labeled, ego driven, calculating world… or in the very same space we can search for truth and clarity, speak from our hearts, and feel heard.

The choice is always ours to make.
