I sat down and got real with myself about my life.
I thought about what lights me up, the kind of people I wanted to associate with, the things I wanted to achieve, and the places I wanted to go.
As I imagined my future to include these things, the gap between who I was and who I aspired to be felt huge.
I always knew it was important to surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, I just didn’t know what made them different from everyone else.
I started to really study and pay attention, trying to figure out what the differences were and I’ve come up with a short list of what I’ve noticed.
A lot of these I didn’t see coming.
I had no idea how incredibly brave, humble, generous and gracious these types of people would be.
I didn’t know that they move forward and do their work in life with the full intention of making the world a better place for others.
From the outside looking in I expected to see some self centeredness, greed or pride… but those are not characteristics you will find in these people.
The dreamers and the doers I sought out are genuinely good people, and my definition of good people has now been formed by spending time with them.
They are humble. They don’t ever think they are better than anyone else because they know how hard it is to move forward. They face their demons everyday, and understand they have a lot to learn about everything. Their ego doesn’t rule them, they listen to feedback, aim to serve others, and are never defensive.
They support other people.
They are generous. They are highly motivated to do right by others and they share what they have learned and how they see things without strings attached.
They love to work to make a difference. They aren’t lazy, they aren’t entitled, and they don’t think they are deserving of anything. They work to contribute, not for personal gain.
They care about community, culture, and connection. They understand that you can always reach more people, greater heights, and go places with other people that you can’t get to on your own.
They are full of integrity. They always do the right thing because that’s one of their values, not because they think they should. They will not do something that is harmful, deceitful, or dishonest.
They believe trust is the foundation to everything. They understand the fragile nature of trust and work tirelessly to build trust in others by keeping their word, not taking advantage of a situation, and being transparent in their quest.
They are careful with the words they use. They understand the power of language and they are thoughtful in all of their conversations and correspondence.
They are movers and shakers on a mission to make the world a better place with whatever their unique contribution may be.
They are the dreamers and the doers, and if you surround yourself with these people they inspire you to become more and more like them.
