Seth Godin talks about doing work that matters and how it’s important to do so. I literally had no idea what that meant. What really does matter? What is work that doesn’t matter? How do you discern the two?

I have wondered since I started writing this blog if it could be considered work that mattered.

It matters to me because it’s my little place in the world. A space where I am safe to express my opinions, connect with myself, and to build my voice in the world. But I have often wondered if it matters in the grand scheme of life, and in the way Seth is referring to it.

When I first started writing it was Zig Ziglars words that helped me get through the beginning, the part where I always want to quit because I feel like I’m not good enough.

“Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can do it better.” I repeated this over and over to myself to keep going.

I felt like my blog was worth doing for me, I just didn’t know if it was worth doing for others. I didn’t know if it mattered.

As I’ve been chipping away at the online course I want to build, I’m having the same thoughts roll through my head.

What is work that matters? What is worth doing? What can I build and what can I teach that would be worth doing?

It’s still not obvious to me, but I’m starting to find some answers about what matters. It’s the big things that matter, like Airbnb and Apple and Facebook and Google. Things that really change the way people are doing life.

But it’s also the little things that matter because they change people’s lives, even if only for a split second, and even if only a little bit. Those little bits add up over time.

Caring about other people matters.

Helping the world be a better place matters.

Teaching someone something they didn’t know before matters.

Providing a product that makes someones life more beautiful, easier, or more peaceful matters.

Sharing what is in your heart matters.

Connecting on a heart level matters.

Inspiration matters.

Motivation matters.

Encouragement matters.

A smile matters.

Love matters.

I’m learning that everything matters as long as it brings a little bit of good to the world.

Being the light matters.

Now that I have started to figure this out, I not only am following Seth Godins guidance, but I am sharing it.

It doesn’t matter what you do…it only matters that you do.

Do work that matters.

Is important.
