I generally have 5 books on the go and several that I’ve started and not finished.
I have attention deficit disorder when it comes to reading.
I have made several excuses for it; I’m too tired at night to focus, I just can’t get into this one, it’s a slog because it’s so technical, and several other similar excuses pop up.
Truth be told, there are definitely some books I’m not ready for. I don’t have the context or experience to fully appreciate the idea they are sharing.
I was listening to Seth Godin on a podcast. He was talking to the interviewer who was a young artist that was trying to figure out and gain validation for his chosen path.
Seth told him that he needs to have the discipline to learn all of the aspects of his craft. He needs to read the books and know the things that the greats who have come before him know. He said he needs to read the books that are hard to read because that’s what professionals do.
It was a valid point.
This is one of the many things that sets someone apart from the rest of the crowd.
We all want to take the easy path, but it’s the people who have the discipline to do the hard things that begin to step away from the crowd.
