When I have enough money I will…
When I’m 50 pounds lighter then…
When the kids are grown up…
When I am debt free…
We are in love with the fantasy we create about our future self and all of the ways our life will be better “then”.
For years I was completely absorbed in being a stay at home mom. I homeschooled my kids and my whole life revolved around their activities. When my kids went to school I couldn’t function. I had no idea how to function or what to do.
I ended up going back to work.
Then I was working full time and about a year later I became a single mom. I was completely absorbed in work during the day and being a mom after work. Mostly I was running on empty and in love with the fantasy of my future self and all that I could do when I had more time.
My kids would go stay at their dads for several days in a row and all of a sudden I had lots more time. And I couldn’t function. I was completely lost and couldn’t function.
What I discovered after several derailments was that I needed to start planning and building my life around my future self. Whether that future self was 5 minutes from now, tomorrow’s self, or 25 years away, she needed to always be considered.
The more choices I make today with my future self in mind, the better my life has become. Everyday I am grateful for learning to make better choices because overall my life keeps getting better and better.
What you eat today directly affects how your energy levels for the next 72 hours.
The money you save today will compound with the money you save tomorrow and the next day.
The debt and bills that get paid off now disappear and set you free.
Being brave today means one less fear for tomorrow.
All of these little steps made with your future self in mind begun to add up and create an exponentially better life.
Your future self matters.
